Jennifer S Carew, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Arizona and Co-Director of the Hematological Malignancies Disease Team at the University of Arizona Cancer Center. Her translational research bridges mechanistic studies on experimental anticancer agents with early-phase clinical trials, focusing on overcoming drug resistance in hematological malignancies. PhD, University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (mitochondrial defects in chronic lymphocytic leukemia) Postdoctoral Research, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (drug resistance in hematological malignancies) Dr. Carew's research emphasizes targeting regulators of protein turnover (e.g., ubiquitin-proteasome, autophagy) and epigenetic stability in cancers like multiple myeloma and leukemia. Her work includes developing lysosomal autophagy inhibitors (e.g., ROC-325), exploring oncolytic viruses, and combining novel agents with standard therapies to enhance efficacy. Her lab utilizes proteomic and pharmacodynamic analyses to validate drug mechanisms, such as NEDD8 inhibition (MLN4924) in leukemia, and investigates tumor suppressor roles of autophagy genes in myeloid neoplasms. Clinical translation includes investigator-initiated trials for hematological malignancies and advanced solid tumors. Dr. Carew holds multiple patents and has received institutional recognition from the American Cancer Society, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and Voelcker Foundation. She collaborates extensively with clinical teams to advance preclinical findings into therapeutic strategies, particularly for renal cell carcinoma, soft tissue sarcomas, and leukemias.
