Professor
Anders Bentien serves as a Professor and Section Head in the Department of Bio- and Chemical Technology - Process and Materials Engineering at Aarhus University. He also holds a position as Lecturer at WATEC (Center for Water Technology). His institutional affiliations include Åbogade 40A in Aarhus N, Denmark, and the WATEC Center at Hangövej 2. Professor Bentien's research focuses on electrochemical energy storage and conversion systems , with particular expertise in redox flow batteries, vanadium battery technology, and hydrogen production through alkaline water electrolysis. His work spans fundamental material science to applied engineering solutions for renewable energy integration. Key research themes include electrode optimization, battery degradation mechanisms, crossover mitigation strategies, and novel approaches to enhance hydrogen production efficiency. Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong trend toward practical applications of energy storage technologies, particularly in grid-scale and residential settings. His research increasingly integrates multiple energy conversion pathways, as seen in projects like DUALFLOW that combine hydrogen production with chemical synthesis. The work demonstrates a progression from fundamental material studies to system-level engineering solutions for renewable energy challenges. Professor Bentien actively supervises PhD students (3 listed) and has been involved in numerous research projects, including the LC-H2 project for low-cost hydrogen production, H2-Anode development, and the DUALFLOW dual circuit flow battery system. His collaborative network spans multiple countries and institutions, reflecting the international nature of energy research. His laboratory work centers around the Center for Water Technology at Aarhus University, where he leads research on electrochemical systems for energy conversion and storage. The research group maintains strong connections with industry partners working on Power-to-X technologies, as evidenced by his involvement in courses on biogas valorization and ammonia plant modeling.
