Assistant Professor
Hannah Shamloo is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geological Sciences at Central Washington University (CWU). Her research focuses on igneous petrology, volcanology, and geochemistry, particularly studying magma reservoirs beneath volcanoes and eruption processes. She leads the CHIVES lab, where experimental simulations of magmatic processes are conducted. Dr. Shamloo teaches courses including Volcanoes of the USA, Isotope Geochemistry, and Volcanology, emphasizing STEM education and diversity through mentorship programs. Education: PhD in Geological Sciences from Arizona State University (2020); BS in Geology from California State University, Northridge (2015). Research interests include reconstructing volcanic eruption timing, crystal cargo analysis, and magma dynamics, with fieldwork in locations like the Goat Rocks (WA) and collaborations with Indigenous communities in volcanic regions. Her work integrates experimental petrology, data modeling, and Python coding to analyze volcanic materials. She actively promotes inclusivity in geosciences through initiatives like SACNAS and NDiSTEM. Recent fieldwork includes collaborations with Māori members in New Zealand and studies on Mount Baker's volcanic systems. Advising and grants: Mentors both undergraduate and graduate students in research projects, with grants including NSF-funded studies on magma systems and eruption mechanisms. Lab activities involve magma simulation experiments and advanced geochemical analysis techniques. Labs/teams: PI of the CHIVES lab, which explores magmatic processes through experimental and analytical methods. Engages in interdisciplinary collaborations to advance understanding of volcanic hazards and Earth's dynamic systems.
