Associate Professor
Lasse Vuorsola serves as an Associate Professor at Stockholm University's Department of Slavic and Baltic Studies, Finnish, Dutch and German. His academic work focuses on the Finland-Swedish linguistic minority in Sweden, examining how this community navigates educational and social contexts through language practices. His research interests include sociolinguistics, interactional sociolinguistics, language policy, nexus analysis, and critical discourse analysis. Vuorsola examines how minority language communities construct spatial repertoires and position themselves within dominant linguistic landscapes, both physically and digitally. His work often addresses the implementation of language policies at local levels and their practical effects on minority language communities. His publications reveal consistent engagement with how Sweden Finnish minority pupils interact in bilingual educational settings, how minority activists position themselves through linguistic citizenship, and how language policies function (or fail) in supporting minority language education. His research demonstrates how theoretical frameworks like positioning theory and spatial orientation can illuminate real-world language practices. Vuorsola is actively involved in the government-commissioned project 'Revitalisation of the national minority language Finnish' (2022-2024), where Stockholm University is working to strengthen and develop Finnish language preservation efforts. He also served as a member of Språkrådet's reference group from 2016-2021.
