His academic journey began at Linköping University as a subject teacher studying English and German. Through an exchange program between Linköping University's German department and the University of Cincinnati, he spent nearly three years in Ohio, where he completed a Master of Arts degree with a literary focus in German. During this period, he also taught German and Swedish at the University of Cincinnati. Subsequently, he moved to Lund to pursue his PhD in German linguistics, working simultaneously as a research assistant on a project concerning information structuring in German texts while teaching grammar, translation, text, and pronunciation in basic German courses. Professor Nystrand's research focuses on German linguistics, with particular expertise in German grammar, syntax, and comparative analysis between German and Swedish. His scholarly work examines auxiliary verb selection patterns, spatial perspective in prefixed verbs, translation strategies between German and Swedish, and gender assignment in German nouns. His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on directional motion verbs in non-motion contexts, translation of nominalized infinitives, and systematic investigations of gender assignment for nouns ending in -ə in German. His research output includes 30 publications comprising working papers, specialist articles, books, and academic contributions. As an educator, Dr. Nystrand teaches across the full spectrum of German language courses at Lund University, including TYSA01 (German: Level 1), TYSA21 (German: Level 2), TYSA32 (German: Level 3), beginner courses, translation (TYSD03), grammar (TYSD05), and BA-level courses. He actively supervises student essays and serves as Director of Studies, overseeing curriculum development and academic standards for the German program. Dr. Nystrand maintains active engagement with the academic community through regular participation in national German subject conferences and scholarly presentations. His administrative contributions extend beyond his Director of Studies role to include service on Section Board 4 at the Centre for Languages and Literature, where he helps shape departmental policies and academic direction.
