Carsten Nico Portefée Hjortsø is an Associate Professor in the Department of Food and Resource Economics at the University of Copenhagen, specializing in Project Management and Strategy with over 15 years of experience in management research, teaching, and international capacity building initiatives. His work bridges academic theory and practical development applications across multiple continents. His educational background includes: MSc in Forestry (1997) PhD in Natural Resource Management Both degrees were obtained at the Centre of Forest and Landscape, LIFE, University of Copenhagen, establishing his foundation in resource management systems. Professor Hjortsø's research spans institutional theory, entrepreneurship, innovation, business development, and capacity building, with strong methodological expertise in systems thinking and operations research. His work consistently addresses sustainable resource management challenges through interdisciplinary approaches, connecting institutional frameworks with practical business and educational solutions in developing contexts. Current projects focus on agri-entrepreneurship integration in African higher education and municipal climate transition frameworks. Analysis of his 15 most recent publications (2021-2025) reveals three dominant research trajectories: (1) Institutional analysis of innovation ecosystems in agri-food systems, particularly in African and Vietnamese contexts; (2) Sustainable transition frameworks for climate policy implementation at municipal levels; and (3) Pedagogical development in entrepreneurship education through international capacity building projects. His methodological signature combines soft systems methodology with multi-criteria decision analysis, often applied to stakeholder-intensive resource management challenges in developing economies. Professor Hjortsø has supervised six PhD students and over 25 MSc projects, demonstrating significant mentorship capacity. His major grant portfolio includes: Project Manager for Danida-funded Forest Management in Bolivia (FOMABO) capacity building project (2004-2011) Project Manager for University of Copenhagen's Innovation and Entrepreneurship initiative (2014-2016) National Component Coordinator for DK-Malaysia Capacity-building project on Multipurpose Forestry He actively collaborates with institutions across Africa, Asia, and South America through the Section for Production, Markets and Policy, with recent work focusing on community engagement in agricultural universities and municipal climate planning frameworks. His international consultancy work includes stakeholder analysis training in Malaysia, natural resource management workshops in Vietnam, and project evaluation in Nepal and Tanzania.
