Dr. Alison K. Ventura is a Professor in the Kinesiology and Public Health Department at California Polytechnic State University. She is a leading expert in obesity prevention during infancy and early childhood, with research focusing on breastfeeding promotion, healthy bottle-feeding practices, and supporting families with young children. Dr. Ventura maintains active community engagement as a member of the Central Coast Breastfeeding Coalition and serves as a Commissioner for First 5 San Luis Obispo County. Her educational background includes a Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies, an M.S. in Human Development and Family Studies, and an M.S. in Nutrition Sciences from The Pennsylvania State University, along with a B.S. in Psychology with a Biology Emphasis from the University of California, Davis. She completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Monell Chemical Senses Center from 2008-2011. Dr. Ventura's research focuses on primary prevention of obesity within family contexts, particularly examining parent-child interactions during early childhood feeding. Her work investigates how to promote responsive feeding practices during breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, and early solid food-feeding interactions. She has secured over $2 million in research funding from the National Institutes of Health to study how mother-infant feeding interactions develop and change across the first year of infancy. Her extensive publication record demonstrates consistent focus on infant feeding practices, obesity prevention, and the relationship between maternal behaviors and child outcomes. Recent work has expanded to examine the impact of digital media on feeding interactions and the development of standardized tools for assessing infant feeding behaviors. Her work bridges academic research with practical community applications, particularly through partnerships with WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) programs to implement evidence-based feeding practices.
