Michael Arrigo is a Professor and Coordinator of the Graduate Program in the School of Art at Bowling Green State University (BGSU), part of the College of Arts & Sciences. He holds an MFA and BFA in Painting from The Ohio State University (1990 and 1988). His work focuses on video, installation art, and painting, exploring themes of perception, technology, and the everyday. He has taught at BGSU since 1999 and served as a National AP Portfolio Reviewer. Previously, he directed the Young Artists at Work program, a nationally recognized arts outreach initiative. Arrigo’s research combines technical experimentation with philosophical inquiry. He transforms mundane interactions with family into art that exposes hidden tensions and structures in daily life. His artistic practice emphasizes a 'tinkerer' approach, deconstructing ideas and technologies to reassemble them into provocative works. Notable works include Self Starter (2019), Data Does Not Die (2017), and Reasonable Resolution (2016), which address themes like surveillance, existential inquiry, and social justice. He has exhibited widely, including at the Hoyt National, Profiles, and Randolph St. Gallery in Chicago. Awards include the G.C.A.C. Individual Artists Fellowship and painting accolades from the Columbus and Toledo Museums of Art. His teaching spans foundational courses like Design Studio and advanced topics in art, reflecting his commitment to both pedagogy and innovation.
