Assistant Professor
Adrienn G Varga is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neuroscience at the University of Florida. Her research focuses on neural mechanisms underlying respiratory control, opioid-induced respiratory depression, and dopaminergic signaling in sensory-motor integration. She has active grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIDA, NHLBI) investigating arousal circuits and cocaine-mediated immune interactions. She teaches advanced courses including BMS6020 Clinical Neuroscience and GMS7795 Special Topics in Neuroscience. Her work combines pharmacological interventions with electrophysiological recordings in animal models to study respiratory physiology. Key areas of exploration include how dopamine influences sniffing behavior and how opioid receptors modulate brainstem respiratory centers. Recent studies highlight the role of the locus coeruleus and Kӧlliker-Fuse nucleus in respiratory control mechanisms. Grants: ACTIVE Cocaine-Mediated Modulation (NIDA, 2025) Respiration & Opioid Depression (NHLBI, 2021-2025) Teaching: Clinical Neuroscience, Doctoral Research, Advanced Neuroscience Research Labs: McKnight Brain Institute (Gainesville, FL)
