Associate Professor
Dr. Péter Bokody is an Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Plymouth, part of the School of Society and Culture within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business. He specializes in Italian Renaissance art, with research interests in gender studies, metapainting, contemporary visual theory, and political iconography. Prior to Plymouth, he taught at institutions such as the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (Budapest) and McDaniel College (Budapest). His academic career includes research fellowships at prestigious institutes like the Kunsthistorisches Institut (Max Planck Institut, Florence) and Princeton University's Index of Christian Art. His teaching focuses on empowering students through foundational modules in art history and visual culture, as well as advanced topics like patronage in Renaissance painting and contemporary art issues. He leads research methods modules for postgraduate students and supervises PhD/ResM projects in Renaissance art, metapainting, and political iconography. Bokody’s research explores themes such as spatial representation in Renaissance art, gender dynamics in historical narratives, and the intersection of art and politics. His recent work includes analyses of sexual violence imagery in early Renaissance Italy and the interplay between Dante’s literature and visual art. He has contributed to scholarly debates on metapainting’s theoretical frameworks and the evolution of artistic reflexivity in pre-modern Europe. His publications span from 2003 to 2025, reflecting a commitment to bridging medieval, Renaissance, and contemporary art studies. He actively engages with both academic and public audiences, emphasizing art’s role in reflecting societal values and historical contexts.
