Norman Makoto Su is an Associate Professor of Computational Media and Vice Chair of the Human Computer Interaction MS program at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC). He is also an affiliated faculty member at the Institute of Software Research at UC Irvine. His research focuses on integrating empirical and humanistic methods in HCI to study subcultures and design with marginalized communities. He directs the Authentic User Experience Lab (AUX Lab), exploring societal innovations through collaborations with groups like farmers, roboticists, and gamers. Education: PhD in Informatics from UC Irvine, Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at University College Dublin, BA in Computer Science with a Music minor from UC Berkeley (including a Japan exchange at Osaka University). Research Interests: Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), CSCW, Ubiquitous Computing, STS, and design ethics. Recent work emphasizes rural computing, affective computing, and tech ethics.
