Senior Lecturer
Erika Jonsson Laukka is a Senior Lecturer and research group leader at Karolinska Institutet’s Aging Research Center (ARC), part of the Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society. Her work focuses on cognitive processes, brain correlates of aging, and mental health, particularly investigating olfactory function’s role in dementia risk and cognitive decline. She leads the Cognitive Aging and Mental Health research group, which uses longitudinal databases like SNAC-K and post-COVID cohorts to study these topics. Research interests include preclinical dementia markers, vascular factors in cognition, olfactory dysfunction in aging, structural brain correlates of cognitive performance, and long-term post-COVID effects. She coordinates cognitive data collection in the Swedish National Study on Aging and Care in Kungsholmen (SNAC-K) and teaches courses on aging and dementia. Laukka has secured funding from the Swedish Research Council for projects like studying long-term cognitive deficits post-mild COVID-19 and olfactory function’s predictive role in dementia. Her team includes researchers like Ingrid Ekström (Assistant Professor) and postdoctoral fellows such as Javier Oltra, alongside PhD student Frida Smids. Key projects address olfactory decline mechanisms, cardiovascular health impacts, and longitudinal trajectories of cognitive aging. Recent studies highlight links between olfactory impairment and mortality/dementia risk, as well as environmental factors like air pollution on sensory decline. Publications emphasize longitudinal analysis of cognitive trajectories, genetic influences on memory, and combined biomarker approaches for dementia risk prediction. She collaborates with institutions like Danderyd University Hospital and Stockholm University, reflecting interdisciplinary engagement in aging research.
