Dr Phyllis Araneo is an academic at the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC) who teaches in the School of Education and Tertiary Preparation Pathways . With a background in art and media, she transitioned to academia in 2002 and has focused on interdisciplinary research and teaching in areas such as visual literacy , education for sustainable development (ESD) , and science communication . Her work emphasizes pedagogical innovation and the role of imagery in shaping environmental consciousness. Degrees: PhD, MEd, MCA (Sunshine Coast), BA Painting/Design (Rowan, cum laude) Her research explores curriculum evaluation , pedagogical optimization , and interdisciplinary approaches to ESD, while also investigating the historical and contemporary impact of visual symbols like the Green Man. She has authored publications analyzing immersive teaching modes, block delivery models, and the integration of science understanding into responsible environmental behavior. Recent Publications (2024–2025) focus on non-traditional student transitions, cross-institutional enabling practices, and the evolution of visual cues across time. These works span subfields such as relational pedagogy , curriculum design , and symbolic representation .
