Assistant Professor
Dr. Annie E. Wertz is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences at the University of California, Santa Barbara, within the College of Letters & Science. She directs the Lab for Infant Learning and Cognition (LILAC), focusing on cognitive development from an evolutionary perspective. Her research examines how infants and young children develop specialized learning mechanisms for understanding plants, including social learning strategies, threat avoidance, and edible plant identification. Her work integrates experimental studies in lab settings, naturalistic outdoor observations, and cross-cultural collaborations to explore how evolutionary adaptations shape cognitive systems. Key research areas include infant social cognition, food learning, threat perception, and cultural acquisition. Publications demonstrate a consistent focus on infant cognitive adaptations to natural environments, with recent work emphasizing social evaluation, categorization of natural structures, and methodological innovations. Longitudinal studies show how plant-specific learning mechanisms emerge in early development and influence broader cognitive domains. Her contributions have been recognized with the Margo Wilson Award for best paper in Evolution and Human Behavior (2021) and the Don Symons Adaptationism Award (2023). Research projects have received funding from the Max Planck Society and other institutions.
