Enrique R. Vivoni is the Fulton Professor of Hydrosystems Engineering in the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment at Arizona State University, where he also serves as Director of the Center for Hydrologic Innovations. His academic career spans multiple interdisciplinary roles across ASU's research ecosystem, including appointments in the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory and the School of Earth and Space Exploration. Education: B.S. in Environmental Engineering Science from MIT (1996) M.S. in Environmental Fluid Mechanics from MIT (1998) Ph.D. in Hydrology from MIT (2003) Vivoni's research focuses on water, climate and ecosystem processes with a specific emphasis on semiarid and arid regions of North America. His work integrates numerical modeling of watershed processes, ecohydrology, and hydrometeorology with applications of environmental sensing technologies. He has established significant research collaborations addressing climate change impacts, water resources management, and sociopolitical interactions with natural resources, particularly in US-Mexico border regions. Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong focus on advancing hydrological modeling capabilities, particularly through development of the tRIBS framework, and applying these tools to understand climate change impacts on the Colorado River Basin. His work increasingly incorporates remote sensing technologies, machine learning approaches, and stakeholder engagement to improve water resource decision-making under changing environmental conditions. His research group, Hydrologic Engineering, Science and Sustainability, receives substantial funding from NSF, DOE, NASA, and industry partners for projects addressing critical water challenges in arid regions. He actively mentors graduate students across multiple programs including Hydrosystems Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Geological Sciences. His research team maintains strong connections with field sites across the southwestern US and northern Mexico, particularly through the Center for Hydrologic Innovations, and has established long-term monitoring at key locations including the Santa Rita and Jornada Experimental Ranges.
