Researcher
Anna-Sonia Kau serves as a Research Assistant at the Chair of Urban Water Management at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), working within the "Further water treatment" research group since 2021. Her position is based in Garching at Am Coulombwall 3, where she contributes to advanced water management research initiatives. Her educational background includes a Master of Science in Environmental Engineering from RWTH Aachen University (2021), preceded by a Bachelor of Science in the same field (2018). Her academic journey included an international experience at Kingston University London (2017) and practical work as a student assistant at RWTH Aachen's Department of Hydrology (2018-2021) and an internship at the Rosenheim Water Management Office (2019). Kau's research interests center on wastewater treatment technologies, water reuse systems, and wastewater epidemiology. Her work demonstrates particular expertise in biomarker tracking for public health surveillance, as evidenced by her publications on SARS-CoV-2 monitoring in wastewater systems. She investigates how community size affects biomarker detection and develops normalization methods for accurate epidemiological data extraction from wastewater streams. Her publication record from 2021-2025 reveals a strong focus on applying environmental engineering principles to public health challenges, particularly through wastewater-based epidemiology. Kau has contributed to developing data models like ANNA-WES for GIS-based reporting of biomarker tracking, demonstrating her interdisciplinary approach that bridges environmental science and public health informatics. As a research assistant, Kau collaborates extensively with senior researchers including Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jörg E. Drewes, Dr. Christian Wurzbacher, and other members of the Urban Water Management team at TUM. Her work contributes to the chair's broader research agenda in sustainable water management and environmental surveillance systems.
