Research Fellow
Dr. Jose Padarian Campusano is a Research Fellow at the University of Sydney's School of Life and Environmental Sciences and a member of the Sydney Institute of Agriculture. He holds a BSc in Agriculture and Agricultural Engineering from the University of Chile and completed his MPhil and PhD in Agriculture at the University of Sydney under Professors Budiman Minasny and Alex McBratney. His research focuses on spatio-temporal soil modeling, machine learning applications in soil sciences, and open-source geospatial tools. He has contributed to projects like GlobalSoilMap and the FAO's national digital soil mapping initiative in Chile. His work emphasizes deep learning for soil spectroscopy, model interpretability, and global-local model connectivity. Education: Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and Agricultural Engineering, University of Chile MPhil in Agriculture, University of Sydney PhD in Agriculture, University of Sydney Research Interests: Dr. Campusano's work spans advanced machine learning techniques for soil modeling, data integration from spectral and remote sensing sources, and the development of transparent AI frameworks. He is particularly interested in improving soil model accuracy while addressing 'black-box' challenges through interpretability methods. His contributions include frameworks like QuadMap for uncertainty-aware spatial mapping and transfer learning approaches for soil data localization. Notable Awards: 2021 Early Career ISMC Presentation Award 2019 Best Idea in Digital Soil Mapping Award 2016 Faculty of Agriculture and Environment Scholarship 2011 Becas Chile Scholarship Advising & Grants: Supervises PhD student Lloyd Huang. Recent grants include the AI-based soil carbon monitoring platform funded by Australia-India Strategic Research Fund and the National Soil Carbon Innovation Challenge. Labs/Teams: Active in the Sydney Institute of Agriculture and collaborates with international teams on GlobalSoilMap and FAO initiatives.
