Associate Professor
Dunia H. Urrego is an Associate Professor in Biodiversity and Climate Change at the University of Exeter, UK since 2023, leading research at the interface of biosphere, human systems, and climate. Previously, she held roles including Senior Lecturer (2018–2023) and Lecturer (2013–2018) in Physical Geography at Exeter. She has been a Visiting Scientist at Utrecht University (2017–2019) and held postdoctoral positions at institutions such as Université Bordeaux (2010–2013) and the Florida Institute of Technology (2006–2010). Education : PhD in Biological Sciences from Florida Institute of Technology (USA), BEng in Forest Engineering from Universidad Nacional de Colombia. Her research focuses on biodiversity responses to environmental changes , including megafaunal extinctions , mangrove ecosystems , Amazon resilience , and climate-fire dynamics . She leads the international LaACER network studying abrupt climate change in the American tropics and has pioneered studies on Colombian climate communication . Her work integrates paleoecological data with modern observations to assess ecological resilience and future adaptation strategies. Her recent studies emphasize ENSO-driven forest disturbances , mangrove carbon sequestration , and Indigenous land-use impacts in tropical regions. Her research spans disciplines including paleoclimatology , geochemistry , and dynamic modeling . Key collaborations include global partnerships through LaACER, ERC-funded projects, and interdisciplinary teams addressing climate change impacts in tropical ecosystems.
