Professor Marcello Ruiz is a faculty member at Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), affiliated with the College of Engineering and Architecture's Department of Signals and Communications. He leads the Image Processing and Remote Sensing Research Group under the IU of Oceanography and Global Change, focusing on environmental monitoring through advanced remote sensing techniques. His research integrates AI and satellite technologies to address ecological challenges, with core interests in: Coastal ecosystem vulnerability assessment Forest degradation and fire mapping Super-resolution of satellite imagery Machine learning for multispectral/LiDAR analysis Oceanographic pattern detection Recent publications demonstrate strong emphasis on AI-driven methodologies, with 2023-2024 works focusing on GANs for image enhancement, forest conservation algorithms, and coastal habitat monitoring using high-resolution sensors. His team consistently publishes in Q1 journals including IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing and Remote Sensing. Professor Marcello actively advises graduate students, with supervised theses covering UAV-based forest analysis, coastal bathymetry, and oceanographic eddy detection. He maintains collaborations through IEEE GRSS Spain Chapter and develops tools for environmental agencies needing satellite-based ecosystem monitoring solutions.
