Toshiyuki Okano is a Professor at Waseda University's Faculty of Science and Engineering, School of Advanced Science and Engineering. He holds a Ph.D. in Science from Kyoto University and maintains an active research program focused on circadian biology, photobiology, and magnetoreception. His work bridges molecular biology, physiology, and behavioral studies across diverse animal models including zebrafish, medaka, and other teleost species. Dr. Okano investigates how animals detect and respond to environmental light cues through specialized photoreceptive molecules like cryptochromes. His work explores circadian rhythms, lunar-synchronized behaviors, magnetoreception mechanisms, and the molecular basis of photoperiodic time measurement. He has made significant contributions to understanding how cryptochrome proteins function as potential magnetoreceptors in birds and as circadian clock components across diverse species.
