Wojciech Tylbor-Kubrakiewicz is a Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where he has been professionally associated with the Faculty of Graphic Arts since 2001. He earned his MFA in 2001 from the Academy's Faculty of Painting, completed additional studies in printmaking, received his PhD in 2010, and obtained his habilitation (post-doctoral qualification) in 2019. From 2016 to 2018, he served as a Visiting Professor at Indiana University's School of Art, Architecture and Design in Bloomington, USA. Professor Tylbor-Kubrakiewicz specializes in graphic arts, with a particular focus on linocut and serigraphy techniques. His artistic research explores themes of journey, time, and memory, often transforming photographs taken during his travels into evocative graphic works. His recent series 'Sehnsucht' examines American landscapes captured during road trips, investigating the elusiveness of time and the psychological distance between the viewer and the depicted spaces. His works are characterized by parallel lines that create optical color mixing effects, with the horizon often placed at the golden ratio to create psychological distance. The artist's work has evolved over more than a decade from prints of everyday objects to dreamlike interiors and increasingly distant landscapes. Dr. Tylbor-Kubrakiewicz has participated in over twenty solo exhibitions in Poland and abroad, and over one hundred fifty group exhibitions internationally. His work is featured in prestigious collections including the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada; the International Print Biennial in Guanlan, China; the National Museum of Art in Taiwan; and the International Print Triennial Association in Krakow. His creative process often begins with snapshots taken while driving, which he later investigates through Google Maps to determine their exact locations, sometimes discovering that the buildings he photographed have been demolished—a temporal dimension central to his artistic inquiry. His major awards include: Honorable Mention at 20th International Triennial of Graphic Art Frechen (2024) Grand Prix at 13th Polish Woodcut and Linocut Quadriennial in Olsztyn (2023) First Prize at 12th Polish Woodcut and Linocut Quadriennial in Olsztyn (2019) MERIT Prize at 18th International Print Biennial Exhibit in Taiwan (2018) Special Prize at 16th Lessedra World Art Print Annual in Bulgaria (2017) As an educator, Professor Tylbor-Kubrakiewicz has served in various capacities at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, from Assistant Instructor to his current position as Professor. He has coordinated Japanese woodcut workshops, curated print collection exhibitions, and served as Erasmus program coordinator for the Faculty of Graphics. His international engagement includes numerous artist talks at institutions worldwide, sharing insights about 'Warsaw Printmaking Traditions' and 'Traveling as a Part of Artist's Practice.' His studio functions as both a traditional printmaking facility and a research laboratory for investigating the relationship between physical travel and artistic creation.
