Jeff Jarvis is a Lecturer in the Department of Tourism at Monash University, specializing in Tourism Marketing and Tourism Development. He holds a PhD from Monash University and has extensive experience in academia and industry consulting. His work focuses on backpacker tourism, youth tourism strategies, and the economic impacts of international travelers. He co-founded the cross-faculty Tourism Research Unit (TRU) at Monash and has contributed to major tourism strategies for Australia, including the award-winning 'Backpacker Strategy.' Education: Jarvis earned a Bachelor of Economics and a Master of Management (International Marketing) from Monash University, followed by a PhD in Tourism. His doctoral research examined the strategic importance of youth tourism to Australia. Research Interests: Jarvis explores tourism development in post-communist states (e.g., Estonia, Latvia), EU membership impacts on tourism, and the role of international students in boosting tourism economies. He has conducted research in Scandinavia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific, emphasizing cross-cultural tourism dynamics. Key Projects: He led research on Fiji's backpacker market for Tourism Fiji, analyzed EU membership effects on Estonia's tourism, and collaborated on Australia's backpacker policy frameworks. His work with Tourism Victoria includes studies on Working Holiday Makers' economic contributions. Advising & Grants: Jarvis has secured industry and government funding for projects like the ARC linkage application on Working Holiday Makers. He advises Tourism Australia, the Fijian Ministry of Tourism, and the Australian Ambassador's office on tourism strategy. Labs/Teams: Co-leads the Tourism Research Unit (TRU) and collaborates with institutions like the Estonian Business School and Copenhagen University's Australian Studies program.
