Prof. Zdeněk Martinec is Professor of Geophysics at Charles University, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics (Prague, Czech Republic) and concurrently holds a research affiliation with the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies . Since 1977 he has been continuously active at Charles University, becoming Associate Professor in 1993 and full Professor in 1999. Education: 1976 – RNDr., Geophysics, Charles University, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics 1993 – Associate Professor (Docent) 1999 – Full Professor of Geophysics Research interests lie at the intersection of geophysics, applied mathematics and satellite geodesy . He develops theoretical and numerical models for the Earth’s gravitational and electromagnetic fields, mantle convection, glacial-isostatic adjustment, and the rotation of a non-rigid Earth. A central theme is the solution of boundary-value problems in spherical and ellipsoidal geometries, with applications to satellite gravity missions (GRACE, GOCE) and altimetry (ICESat, Envisat). Additional foci include electromagnetic induction in the heterogeneous mantle, physical geodesy, and the thermo-mechanical modelling of polar ice sheets. Scientific output comprises more than 150 peer-reviewed publications and a research monograph, spanning 1976-2015. The article portfolio clusters around four dominant strands: (i) spectral-finite element and variational methods for potential-field problems, (ii) viscoelastic and thermo-mechanical modelling of the solid Earth and cryosphere, (iii) satellite-data inversion for present-day mass transport and sea-level change, and (iv) electromagnetic induction studies using geomagnetic observatory and satellite data. Awards & distinctions: DrSc. degree (Doctor of Sciences, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic) Long-term visiting scientist, GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (Germany) Invited professor/researcher, universities and institutes in Sweden, Canada and Iran Doctoral supervision & grants: Principal supervisor of 8 completed PhD theses (1990-2012) and 4 ongoing students Principal investigator on multiple Czech Science Foundation and EU framework projects in geodesy, solid-Earth dynamics and satellite gravimetry Laboratory & team: Prof. Martinec leads the Geophysical Modelling Group at Charles University, maintaining computing clusters for large-scale finite-element and spectral modelling. He collaborates closely with the Geodesy & Geophysics sections at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, where he spends extended research visits.
