Associate Professor
Karl Ho is an Associate Professor of Instruction in the Department of Political Science at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), part of the School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences (EPPS). He serves as Director of Graduate Studies for the Political Science program and is a founding faculty member of UTD's Social Data Analytics and Research Master’s program. His academic career began with a PhD (1996) and MS (1992) in Political Science from the University of North Texas, complemented by a Diploma in Journalism from Shue Yan College (1988). His research integrates data science methods—including machine learning, data visualization, and text analytics—with political studies, focusing on East Asia, particularly Taiwan and Hong Kong. Key areas include political economy, democratization, public policy, and human rights. Notable works examine pandemic impacts on politics, cognitive warfare in Taiwan, and the China factor in regional elections. Honors include the 2022 Best Paper Award from the American Political Science Association and the 2018 Taiwan Fellowship. He has held leadership roles such as Director of Academic Computing (2005–2018) and has taught courses on data methods, structural equation modeling, and political economy of East Asia. Affiliations include the American Political Science Association and the Midwest Political Science Association. Karl Ho actively collaborates internationally, co-hosting the Data Analytics Colloquium with National Chung Hsing University and presenting widely on data science applications in social research.
