Associate Professor
Stéphanie Horion is an Associate Professor at the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management within the Faculty of Science at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. She holds a PhD in Sciences and an MSc in Physical Geography. Dr. Horion is the recipient of the prestigious Villum Young Investigator 2021 award for her DRYTIP project (Drought induced tipping point in ecosystem functioning) and serves as Principal Investigator for the newly founded Global Wetland Center funded by the Novo Nordisk Challenge Programme 2023. Her research focuses on Earth Observation of terrestrial ecosystems, global environmental change, tipping points, and climate extremes. Dr. Horion has made significant contributions to understanding ecosystem responses to drought and other climate extremes using remote sensing approaches. Her work has been instrumental in developing methodologies to identify critical transitions and tipping points in ecosystem functioning across various biomes. Dr. Horion's publication record demonstrates a consistent focus on understanding how terrestrial ecosystems respond to environmental stressors, particularly drought. Her research spans multiple continents including Europe, Northern Eurasia, the Sahel region, and California, showcasing the global applicability of her methods. Her work bridges remote sensing technology with ecological theory to provide early warning signals of ecosystem degradation. Her scientific achievements have been recognized with several awards: Villum Young Investigator 2021 (DRYTIP project) EMS Tromp Award 2017 EGU Young Scientist Outstanding Poster Paper (YSOPP) 2010 Dr. Horion actively contributes to the academic community through editorial work as an Editor for Land Degradation and Development journal and as a member of the European Geophysical Union since 2021. She regularly serves on PhD assessment committees at the University of Copenhagen, Lund University, and the University of Cape Town, demonstrating her commitment to mentoring the next generation of scientists. Prior to her current position, Dr. Horion worked at the Joint Research Center of the European Commission (JRC, Ispra) from 2009 to 2012, where she contributed to the development of the European and Global Drought Observatories. This experience provided her with valuable expertise in operational drought monitoring that informs her current research on ecosystem tipping points.
