Benjamin Brainard is a Professor and Gunst Professor in Small Animal Medicine at the College of Veterinary Medicine, serving as Director of Clinical Research and affiliated with the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. He holds roles in the Small Animal Medicine & Surgery department and the Office of Research & Faculty and Graduate Affairs. His expertise spans clinical translational research, with a focus on coagulation, fish anesthesia, and small animal critical care. Dr. Brainard earned his VMD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 2000, followed by an internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at the University of Georgia. He completed dual residencies in Veterinary Anesthesiology and Emergency and Critical Care at the University of Pennsylvania, becoming board-certified in both fields. He serves as an associate editor for the Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care . His research interests include coagulation defects in critical care, platelet function, hypercoagulability diagnosis, fish anesthesia techniques, and long-term ventilation strategies for small animals. His work has advanced understanding of hemostatic agents, antiplatelet drug effects, and diagnostic methodologies in veterinary medicine. Dr. Brainard leads clinical research initiatives and has contributed to evidence-based guidelines for veterinary CPR through the RECOVER collaborative. His laboratory research focuses on coagulopathy management in dogs and horses, with studies on thrombelastography and platelet function analysis. He actively engages in translational research to bridge clinical practice and scientific discovery. He oversees clinical research operations, mentors trainees, and collaborates on studies involving coagulation disorders, anesthetic protocols, and critical care advancements. His contributions have enhanced diagnostic accuracy and treatment strategies in veterinary emergency medicine.
