Associate Professor
Alexandra Lutz serves as Associate Research Professor and Director of the Graduate Program of Hydrologic Sciences at the Desert Research Institute (DRI) in Reno, Nevada. Her work focuses on groundwater sustainability under climate change, with field studies spanning West Africa and Nevada to address critical water resource challenges in arid and semi-arid regions. Her academic credentials include: Ph.D. in Hydrogeology from the University of Nevada, Reno M.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Nevada, Reno M.A. in German Literature from the University of Nevada, Reno B.A. in Economics and German Literature from the University of Vermont Dr. Lutz's research centers on groundwater sustainability, examining climate change impacts on water resources in data-scarce environments. She investigates recharge dynamics, water quality (particularly fluoride contamination), and sustainable yield for domestic and agricultural use through numerical modeling and field studies in Mali, Ghana, Niger, and Nevada. Her work addresses urgent challenges like population growth pressures and climate variability in water-stressed regions. Analysis of her publication record reveals consistent focus on hydrogeological field applications, with emphasis on West Africa and arid U.S. regions. Key themes include groundwater modeling in data-scarce contexts, climate change adaptation, water quality assessment for public health, and sustainable resource management. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges hydrology, environmental science, and development studies. As Director of DRI's Graduate Program of Hydrologic Sciences, she oversees academic training while maintaining active research collaborations. Her projects demonstrate practical engagement with water resource challenges, including Nevada lithium extraction impacts, Salton Sea wetland dynamics, and post-megafire soil recovery in Western ecosystems.
