Ricardo Atienza Badel is an Associate Professor of Sound and Media Art at Aalto University's School of Arts, Design and Architecture in Helsinki, Finland. He is also a researcher affiliated with the CRESSON Team, a Joint Research Unit involving CNRS, UGA, ENSA Nantes, ENSA Grenoble, and Centrale Nantes. As both a scholar and sound artist with a PhD in Architecture, his work bridges academic research and artistic practice in exploring the relationship between sound, space, and urban experience. Professor Atienza's research focuses on the situated experience of place, examining how embodied, social, sensory, and sensitive interactions occur within everyday environments. He investigates sound as a qualified experience of place that serves as both an exploratory tool and essential material for addressing the complexity of our spatial situations. His work spans urban soundscapes, architectural acoustics, sensory environments, and media art, with particular attention to urban sound identity and the relationship between sound and urban design. Analysis of his recent publications reveals a consistent trajectory exploring how sound functions within urban contexts, with increasing attention to practical applications. His 2024 work on ambulance acoustics demonstrates applied research in emergency vehicle design, while his earlier work established foundational concepts in urban sound identity. His research methodology consistently blends academic inquiry with artistic practice, resulting in outputs that include scholarly publications, sound installations, collective improvisations, and public space interventions. Professor Atienza's research has been supported through collaborations with major institutions including RATP (Paris public transportation), and he has participated in numerous international research projects. His work with the CRESSON team has produced significant contributions to understanding sound environments in transportation systems, urban spaces, and architectural contexts. As a supervisor, Professor Atienza offers opportunities for interdisciplinary research at the intersection of sound studies, architecture, and urban design. His integrated approach combining academic research with artistic practice provides students with unique opportunities to engage with theoretical concepts through practical application and creative expression in the field of sound and spatial experience.
