Assistant Professor
Ivo van der Helm serves as an Assistant Professor in International and European Law at Utrecht University's Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance. His academic appointment has been continuous since 2001, following his role as a junior lecturer/researcher from 1999-2001. His educational background includes a Doctorate in Dutch Law from the University of Amsterdam (1989-1994) and European Legal Studies at the University of Kent, England (1993-1994). Professor van der Helm specializes in Labour Law and Social Security Law with particular expertise in Data Protection and Privacy of Sick Employees. His research focuses on the intersection of European and International Law with workplace regulations, especially regarding health-related privacy issues and social security frameworks. His academic activities include serving on PhD examination committees, most recently for research on privacy in employment relationships in Suriname (2020), and delivering invited talks such as at the Regional Young Bar Congress districts (2012). Before his academic career, he gained practical legal experience as a legal advisor at the Social Insurance Bank (1996-1999), Project Secretary at the Ministry of Justice (1995-1996), and served on the Board of GAK Nederland BV (1995).
