Bridget Mary Sweet serves as Professor and Area Chair in the School of Music at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, teaching music education pedagogy including choral methods, middle-level general music, graduate courses, and healthy practices for musicians. Her email is bsweet@illinois.edu. Her research centers on middle-level choral education, adolescent voice change (both female and male), empowering young music students, and LGBTQ+ issues in music classrooms. With extensive experience as a teacher, clinician, and adjudicator for adolescent singers, her work emphasizes lived experiences and qualitative methodologies. Recent publications (2018-2024) demonstrate consistent focus on adolescent vocal development, with studies on straw phonation effects, vocal identity formation, and systemic challenges like motherhood in academia. Her research bridges voice science and social justice, frequently examining intersections of gender, identity, and pedagogy. Dr. Sweet actively engages with educational communities through workshops at institutions including West Aurora High School, Glenbard East High School, Loyola Academy, and Prairie Junior High School, mentoring music educators in choral techniques and adolescent vocal development.
