Adjunct Professor
John Hodges is Staff Emeritus of the School of Media Arts and Design (SMAD) at James Madison University, where he served as Technology Manager from 1999 until his retirement in February 2025. He concurrently works as an Adjunct Professor at JMU, teaching video and multimedia production. Hodges holds a Master’s in Educational Technology (in progress) and has extensive experience in broadcast production, post-production, and educational technology. Education: Pursuing Master’s in Educational Technology (JMU, anticipated completion). Research & Expertise: Hodges specializes in video production techniques, multimedia technology integration, and educational applications of media tools. His career includes 20 years at Virginia Public Television, where he directed award-winning documentaries and managed production teams. He is an Apple Certified Instructor and has expertise in editing software like Final Cut Pro and legacy systems such as the Sony RM440 and Grass Valley VPE-41. Awards: Recipient of The Telly Award for Virginia Outdoors. Virginia Association of Broadcasters Best Documentary for Virginia Outdoors. Emmy nomination for In the Garden with The Viettes. Teaching & Outreach: Beyond JMU, Hodges mentors Boy Scouts in video merit badges and collaborates with local high school television studios. His passion lies in democratizing access to video production education through innovative pedagogical approaches. Labs & Teams: As SMAD’s Technology Manager, he oversaw the school’s technical infrastructure, ensuring alignment with evolving media production standards.
