Professor
Dr. Sarah Emery is the Ryan Endowed Professor in Biology and Director of the Center for Great Lakes and Watershed Studies at Bowling Green State University. Her research focuses on plant community ecology under anthropogenic global changes, including climate change, nutrient enrichment, invasive species, and urbanization. She investigates these factors' impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning across diverse ecosystems such as sand dunes, grasslands, forests, urban green spaces, and agricultural fields. Emery collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to address watershed and environmental challenges in the Great Lakes region and beyond. Her work emphasizes understanding and mitigating global change effects on plants, particularly through studies of symbiotic relationships, invasive species dynamics, and restoration ecology. Graduate students in her lab explore plant community ecology topics under her guidance. Emery's research highlights the importance of plant-soil interactions, microbial communities, and ecological engineering in maintaining ecosystem resilience. Her scientific contributions span over two decades, with publications addressing topics like invasive species management, urban ecosystem services, and climate change impacts. Emery actively engages in mentoring and outreach, encouraging potential students to join her lab or explore opportunities at the Center for Great Lakes and Watershed Studies.
