Professor
Professor Michael Platten is the Medical Director of the Department of Neurology at the Medical Faculty Mannheim, Heidelberg University, and leads the Clinical Cooperation Unit Neuroimmunology and Brain Tumor Immunology at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ). His work focuses on understanding immune regulation in the central nervous system (CNS), particularly in autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis (MS) and immunosuppressive mechanisms in brain tumors such as gliomas. He has pioneered research on tryptophan metabolism's role in tumor growth and neuroinflammation, identifying critical metabolic pathways and developing immunotherapeutic strategies. Platten is a Co-speaker of the Collaborative Research Center SFB1389, coordinating projects on glioblastoma resistance and immunotherapy. His lab collaborates with institutions like the DKFZ, NCT Heidelberg, and international networks, advancing clinical trials for vaccines targeting IDH1 mutations and AHR inhibitors. He holds an ERC Advanced Grant for tumor-reactive T cell research and leads projects funded by the DFG, EU, and German Cancer Aid. His work bridges basic science and clinical application, emphasizing translational oncology and immune monitoring. Education: Medical degree and neurology training at Heidelberg University, with specialization in neuroimmunology and neuro-oncology. Affiliations: German Cancer Consortium (DKTK), Helmholtz Institute for Translational Oncology, and Hertie Network of Excellence in Clinical Neuroscience. Research Interests: Neuroimmunology, glioma immunotherapy, tryptophan catabolism, tumor microenvironment, neoantigen vaccines, and immune checkpoint blockade. His lab investigates metabolic pathways (e.g., TDO/AHR axis) and myeloid cell dynamics in CNS diseases. Key projects include the AMPLIFY-NEOVAC phase I clinical trial for IDH1-mutant glioma vaccines and development of CAR-NK cell therapies. He has published in Nature , Nature Medicine , and Cancer Cell , with over 200 peer-reviewed articles. Grants & Collaborations: Leads EU-funded projects (e.g., CENTRIC-BRAIN, GlioResolve), DFG CRCs 1389 and 1366, and German Cancer Aid initiatives. Collaborates with industry partners like Bayer in immunooncology. Labs/Teams: Immune Monitoring Unit at NCT Heidelberg, DKFZ-based neuroimmunology group, and multidisciplinary teams advancing clinical and preclinical trials.
