Assistant Professor
Zisis Ioannidis is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Aerospace Science and Technology, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (UoA). He holds a Ph.D. in Physical Sciences from UoA (2008) and has extensive experience in high-power microwave systems and plasma physics. His research focuses on gyrotron development for nuclear fusion applications, including ECRH systems for stellarators like Wendelstein 7-X and ITER. Education: B.S. Physics (2002), M.S. Electronics & Radio Engineering (2004), Ph.D. Physical Sciences (2008) – all from UoA. Affiliations: Research associate at UoA’s Physics Faculty (2009–present), adjunct lecturer at Technological Educational Institute of Piraeus (2009–2015), and contributor to KIT’s gyrotron research (2016–present). Research interests include microwave pulse compression, plasma interactions, and gyrotron design for fusion energy. He collaborates with institutions like KIT and Thales on industrial gyrotron prototypes. His work addresses challenges in high-power microwave generation, thermal management, and frequency stabilization for next-generation fusion devices. Key projects include the EU-DEMO electron cyclotron heating system, ITER gyrotron qualification, and modular cavity designs for dual-frequency operation. His experimental contributions span pulse compressor performance, parasitic oscillation suppression, and quasi-optical mode conversion. Dr. Ioannidis is a member of the Hellenic Physical Society and contributes to fusion energy R&D through international collaborations. His lab focuses on advancing gyrotron technology for long-pulse operation and DEMO readiness.
