Professor Giles Barr is a Professor of Physics at the University of Oxford and Tutorial Fellow in Physics at Magdalen College. He works within the Department of Physics, specifically in the Particle Physics sub-department, and is affiliated with the Accelerator Neutrinos research group. His office is located in the Denys Wilkinson Building, room 664a. Dr. Barr completed both his first degree and doctorate at Oxford before spending 12 years at CERN, the European Organization for Particle Physics Research in Geneva. He then returned to Oxford as a lecturer and has since advanced to his current professorial position. Professor Barr's primary research interests are in experimental particle physics, with a particular focus on neutrino physics and CP violation phenomena. His work spans both theoretical calculations and experimental implementations, contributing significantly to our understanding of fundamental particle interactions. His research has evolved from early work on kaon CP violation experiments (NA31 and NA48) at CERN to current leadership roles in major neutrino oscillation experiments including MINOS and the T2K experiment that sends neutrinos from Tokai, Japan to the Super-Kamiokande detector. His publication record demonstrates expertise across neutrino detection technology, data analysis techniques, and theoretical interpretations, with recent work focusing on the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) and improving our understanding of neutrino properties that could reveal CP violation in the neutrino sector. Professor Barr has made substantial contributions to the field through his extensive publication record, with over 100 journal publications in physics. His work often involves large international collaborations, as evidenced by the lengthy author lists on his recent papers. In addition to his research, Professor Barr is actively involved in teaching, providing college tutorials for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year Physics degree courses, lecturing for the 4th year particle physics option, and organizing the 3rd year practical laboratory on Nuclear and Particle Physics.
