Sebastian Barg is a Professor and Deputy Head of Department at Uppsala University's Department of Medical Cell Biology within the Faculty of Medicine. His research group investigates the cell biology of insulin secretion using advanced light microscopy (TIRF, single molecule imaging) and patch clamp electrophysiology, with a particular focus on regulated exocytosis of secretory granules. He also teaches cell biology and general endocrinology courses. MSc Biochemistry, Free University Berlin (1995) Undergraduate thesis, Vanderbilt University (1995) PhD Medical Sciences, Lund University (2001) Barg's research primarily centers on pancreatic beta cell function, insulin secretion mechanisms, and diabetes pathophysiology. His work employs cutting-edge techniques to study vesicle dynamics, membrane fusion events, and molecular signaling pathways involved in exocytosis. The lab has made significant contributions to understanding how calcium channels, phosphoinositides, and SNARE proteins regulate insulin granule release. Their research has important implications for understanding Type 2 diabetes mechanisms where these processes are impaired. Analysis of Barg's most recent publications reveals a clear trajectory of increasingly sophisticated investigation into beta cell function. His work has evolved from fundamental studies of exocytosis mechanisms to complex investigations of diabetes pathology in human islets, incorporating advanced computational methods like deep learning for image analysis. The research spans molecular biology, cellular physiology, and translational medicine, consistently focusing on the mechanisms underlying insulin secretion defects in diabetes. Recent work has expanded into stem cell-derived islets, GLP-1 receptor signaling, and novel therapeutic targets for diabetes treatment. best PhD thesis Medical faculty Lund (2001) Swedish Research Council (VR) assistant professor position (2002) EMBO longterm fellowship (2002) STINT fellowship award (2002) Swedish Society for Medical Research fellowship award (2002) Albert Renold Career Development Award (EFSD) (2002) Wallenberg fellowship award in Nano/micro Science (2005) Zetterling fellowship award (2008) Göran Gustafsson award in human biology (2008-11) Professor Barg leads a vibrant research group comprising PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and senior scientists. His lab has secured substantial funding from major Swedish and international research councils, including the Wallenberg Foundation and the Swedish Research Council. The research has significant translational potential, with several publications highlighting potential therapeutic targets for diabetes treatment. The group maintains active collaborations with other leading diabetes research teams both within Uppsala University and internationally. The Barg lab operates within Uppsala University's Department of Medical Cell Biology, utilizing state-of-the-art microscopy and electrophysiology facilities. The research group includes several key personnel such as Nikhil Gandasi (Researcher), Muhmmad Omar-Hmeadi (Postdoctoral position), and Emmanuel Chadeuf (PhD student), who have co-authored multiple high-impact publications with Barg. The lab's technical expertise spans molecular biology, advanced imaging, and computational analysis of cellular processes.
