Professor Douglas Macfarlane is the Sir John Monash Distinguished Professor at Monash University’s School of Chemistry. He holds fellowships from the Australian Academy of Science (2007) and the Royal Society of London (2024). His research focuses on ionic liquids for electrochemical applications, renewable energy storage (e.g., ammonia synthesis, batteries), and biotechnology. He has pioneered advancements in vanadium redox flow batteries, thermal energy storage, and electrochemical ammonia production. Macfarlane has co-founded Jupiter Ionics to commercialize ammonia synthesis technology. He has over 900 publications, 30 patents, and an h-index of 140. Education: BSc(Hons) from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand PhD under Prof. Austen Angell at Purdue University Research Interests: Ionic liquids for energy storage, green chemistry, solar cells, and biopreservation.
