Dr. Tamer Zaki is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University (JHU), affiliated with the Whiting School of Engineering. He leads the Flow Science and Engineering (FSE) group and holds memberships in JHU’s Institute for Data Intensive Engineering and Science (IDIES), the Center for Environmental and Applied Fluid Mechanics (CEAFM), and the Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute (HEMI). His research focuses on turbulence, viscoelastic flows, and data-driven modeling, with applications in aerospace, environmental systems, and biomedical engineering. Zaki’s work combines high-fidelity numerical simulations with machine learning and experimental data assimilation to address challenges in fluid mechanics. Education: BSc (Mechanical Engineering, Penn State, 1998); MSc and PhD (Stanford University, 2001/2005). His research interests span transitional and turbulent shear flows, two-fluid interfaces, viscoelastic instabilities, and bio-fluid mechanics. Recent studies include elastoinertial turbulence in viscoelastic jets, compliant wall effects, and turbulence control in hypersonic flows. Publications highlight contributions to understanding turbulence dynamics via advanced simulation techniques and machine learning.
