Associate Professor
Vania Baldi is an Associate Professor at the Department of Sociology, School of Sociology and Public Policies (ESPP), ISCTE-University Institute of Lisbon, and an Integrated Researcher at CIES-Iscte – Center for Research and Studies in Sociology. Her research focuses on Communication and Culture, particularly in digital media, misinformation, political communication, and cyberculture. She teaches courses such as Social Media and Audience Management, Political Communication, and Online Social Networks at master’s and PhD levels. PhD in Ethics and Anthropology, University of Salento (2007) Post-Doctorate, University of Coimbra (2009–2011) Master’s in Communication, Edgar-Morin Center (2003) Aggregation in Communication Sciences, ISCTE (2023) Her research interests include cyberculture, algorithmic society, media literacy, digital democracy, and the sociology of communication. She investigates how digital platforms shape public opinion, the ethical implications of AI, and the dynamics of misinformation in contemporary democracies. Her recent publications and lectures analyze themes such as interpassivity in digital culture, the right not to be misinformed, and the impact of algorithms on political behavior. She has contributed to international conferences and publications on disinformation, digital governance, and media literacy, with a strong focus on Iberian and European contexts. Member of the scientific committee, International Seminar on Constitutional Policies, Culture and Democracy (since 2022) Editorial board, OBS* (OBSERVATORY) and Law and Society Interface Coordinator of conferences on Netflix representations, YouTube methodology, and digital communication Vania Baldi currently supervises 12 doctoral students and 16 master’s students, with completed theses on topics like digital disconnection, influencer culture, and social media branding. She is actively involved in public engagement, delivering lectures across Portugal, Brazil, Spain, Mexico, and France on digital challenges to democracy and media literacy. She leads research projects on misinformation and digital citizenship and contributes to policy discussions as a parliamentary consultant. Her work bridges academic research with societal impact, emphasizing the need for critical digital literacy in the age of artificial intelligence.
