John Wiencke is a researcher at the University of California San Francisco affiliated with the Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center . He holds a PhD in Pathology from the University of Minnesota and has dedicated his career to cancer epidemiology, focusing on glioma and lung cancer. B.S., Biology - University of Minnesota (1976) M.S., Environmental Health - University of Minnesota (1978) Ph.D., Pathology - University of Minnesota (1983) Dr. Wiencke's research explores cancer genetics , epigenetics , and immune biomarkers in glioma and other malignancies. He investigates genetic predispositions to altered blood cell homeostasis, mutational signatures in firefighters, and immune profiles in cancer patients undergoing immunotherapy. His recent work focuses on DNA methylation analysis , polygenic risk scores , and functional germline variants in cancer prognosis. Publications highlight immune microenvironment profiling, glioma subtypes, and environmental carcinogen interactions. Dr. Wiencke has served as Principal Investigator on NIH-funded grants including: R01CA207360 (2017-2022): Immune epigenetic biomarkers in glioma R01CA126831 (2008-2014): Biomarkers of glioma survival R01ES006717 (1994-2011): Lung cancer susceptibility in minorities His career spans multiple NIH collaborations including the Cancer Center Support Grant (P30CA082103) and Brain Tumor SPORE Grant (P50CA097257).
