Yves Martin is a Lecturer at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in the School of Basic Sciences, specifically within the Service de la Physique et de la Chimie - General Engineering (SPC-GE). He serves as Deputy Director of SPC-GE and is also affiliated with EDPY (École Doctorale de Physique) for teaching responsibilities. Dr. Martin's research focuses on plasma physics and fusion energy, with particular expertise in tokamak operations, plasma control systems, and edge localized modes (ELMs). His work primarily centers around the TCV (Tokamak à Configuration Variable) at EPFL, where he has made significant contributions to understanding plasma shaping, stability limits, and control mechanisms. His research spans both theoretical and experimental aspects of magnetic confinement fusion. Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong focus on plasma control techniques, particularly regarding Edge Localized Modes (ELMs) which are critical instabilities in tokamak operation. His work spans plasma shaping optimization, magnetic perturbation techniques, divertor physics including snowflake configurations, and real-time control systems for tokamak operations. These research areas represent some of the most challenging problems in magnetic confinement fusion research. Dr. Martin has supervised doctoral students including Piras Francesco (thesis on 'Extremely Shaped Plasmas to Improve the Tokamak Concept') and Rossel Jonathan (thesis on 'Edge Localized Mode Control in TCV'). His work has contributed to international fusion research efforts, including collaborations related to ITER diagnostics and physics.
