Prof. Dr. Stefan Schürch is an Associate Professor of Analytical Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences (since 2021) within the Faculty of Science at the University of Bern. Since 1997, he has served as Head of the Mass Spectrometry Group and held roles including Oberassistent (1997–2003) and Lecturer (2003–2016). His academic journey includes a Ph.D. (1990–1995) and habilitation (2007) at the University of Bern, preceded by postdoctoral work at the University of California, Riverside (1995–1997). Graduate Studies in Chemistry (1985–1990) Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry (1990–1995) Postdoctoral Research in Chemistry (1995–1997) His research integrates mass spectrometry to decode the gas-phase behavior of oligonucleotides and their interactions with anti-cancer metallodrugs, advancing nucleic acid structural analysis. Additionally, his team investigates spider hemolymph and venom components, leveraging high-resolution analytical techniques. Recent work spans LC-MS/MS methods for MRI contrast agents, AI-driven pharmaceutical manufacturing , and cannabinoid metabolite identification for forensic applications. Key trends in his publications include innovative ionization techniques for pesticide residue analysis, drug target validation in parasitology, and AI integration in lipid-based delivery systems. His group consistently addresses analytical challenges in drug development , environmental monitoring , and medical imaging . As Head of the Mass Spectrometry Group, Schürch collaborates on interdisciplinary projects, including sustained-release pharmaceutical formulations and venom component characterization. His work bridges analytical chemistry with biomedical and industrial applications.
