Research Fellow
Kathrin Theilig serves as Research Fellow at Technical University of Munich, currently affiliated with both the Chair of Energy Efficient and Sustainable Design and Building (since 2021) and the Chair of Architecture and Timber Construction (since 2025). She holds an M.Sc. in Civil Engineering from TUM and has maintained continuous academic engagement since 2016 as a DGNB Consultant. Education: Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Technical University of Munich (2012-2015) Exchange Program, Portland State University (2011-2012) Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, University of Stuttgart (2008-2012) Her research centers on life cycle assessment methodologies, multi-criteria decision frameworks for sustainable construction, and circularity principles in timber building systems. She investigates material flows across building lifecycles, develops decision-support tools for environmental optimization, and examines trade-offs between thermal performance, carbon sequestration, and urban density through parametric modeling. Analysis of her 15 most recent publications reveals a dominant focus on integrating life cycle assessment with multi-criteria decision-making to address sustainability challenges at multiple scales – from building components to entire neighborhoods. Her work consistently emphasizes circular economy applications in construction, with growing attention to timber's role in carbon sequestration and climate-resilient design. Teaching: Theilig serves as assistant lecturer for PhD seminars at TUM during Winter term 2024/25 and Summer term 2025, mentoring doctoral candidates in sustainable building research methodologies. She actively contributes to major research initiatives including EDUwood (campus timber construction), ECO+ (neighborhood sustainability tools), and CircularGreenSimCity, operating within TUM's interdisciplinary research ecosystem focused on climate-resilient built environments.
