Professor
Margrethe Aune is a Professor in Science and Technology Studies at the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies of Culture, Faculty of Humanities, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). She served as Head of Department from 2005 to 2021 and remains an active researcher bridging sociology, energy policy, and technology studies. She holds a Master's degree (1992) and PhD (1998) in Sociology from NTNU, establishing her foundation in social theory and empirical research methods. Her research critically examines technology-society interactions through Science and Technology Studies (STS) frameworks. Key areas include energy cultures and policy transitions, biopolitical controversies, and the domestication of technologies in everyday life. Current work focuses on the 'shaken baby syndrome' legal-medical controversy, analyzing how socio-medical expertise is contested in court proceedings. She investigates how energy practices evolve within Norwegian households and institutions, and explores welfare technology's role in aging societies. Recent publications reveal persistent engagement with energy transitions, showing how household consumption patterns shift amid climate concerns, and how building operators mediate energy management in non-residential spaces. Her work spans reproductive technologies, digitalization controversies, and media's role in shaping public understanding of science. Professor Aune actively supervises Master's and PhD students, fostering interdisciplinary scholarship in cultural studies. She contributes to NTNU's research ecosystem through leadership in collaborative groups addressing societal challenges. She co-leads two major research initiatives: Digitalisering og robotisering av samfunnet (Digitalization and Robotics in Society), examining societal transformations through emerging technologies, and Energi, klima og miljø (Energy, Climate, and Environment), driving interdisciplinary work on sustainable energy transitions and climate governance.
