Senior Lecturer
Jurgen Vercauteren serves as a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine, KU Leuven, with primary affiliation to the Laboratory of Clinical and Epidemiological Virology within the Rega Institute. He is a member of the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Transplantation and contributes to the DigiSoc – KU Leuven Institute for Digital Society. His institutional roles include membership on the Ethics Committee on Animal Experiments, Faculty Council of Medicine (as ZAP), POC Biomedical Sciences, Departmental Council for Microbiology, Immunology and Transplantation, and Peer Review Committee for Education Portfolio. Vercauteren's research spans HIV virology, type 1 diabetes management, and transdisciplinary data applications. His primary interests include epidemiology of HIV-1 drug resistance (as part of the EuResist Network), implementation of data in transdisciplinary research questions, unraveling mast cell roles during Leishmania infections, personalized management of type 1 diabetes with closed-loop devices, HTLV-1 pathogenesis research, and patient empowerment in diabetes research. His work bridges laboratory science with clinical applications and public health implementation. His recent publications reveal a strong focus on early detection of type 1 diabetes through the EDENT1FI project (2025-2029), understanding HTLV-1 neuroinflammatory mechanisms through multi-omics approaches, and monitoring HIV resistance patterns in global populations. The research demonstrates integration across virology, immunology, and digital health technologies, with increasing emphasis on patient-centered outcomes and early disease interception strategies. Current research projects include: De kracht van leefwereld, sociale determinanten en MOST in het ontwerp van vroegdetectiecampagnes voor type 1 diabetes (2025-2029) as Promoter Bijdrage van chronische (retro)virus infecties aan "inflammaging" (2024-2028) as Promoter Ontrafelen van de rol van mestcellen tijdens Leishmania infecties in mens en muis (2021-2024) as Promoter Vercauteren teaches biostatistics courses including Applied Biostatistics (E04N0A), Principles of Biostatistics (E06C9B), and Applied Biostatistics in Dutch (E09Y3A), demonstrating his commitment to quantitative methods training in medical research. His ORCID profile (0000-0003-0698-4736) documents his scholarly contributions across virology, epidemiology, and chronic disease management.
