Associate Professor
Sérgio Colcher is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), where he has served on faculty since 2001. He currently holds multiple leadership roles including Undergraduate Coordinator of the Computer Science Department, Undergraduate Coordinator of Computer Engineering, Graduate Coordinator of Computer Networking, and Coordinator of the Institute of Digital Media (IMD). His educational background includes a B.S. in Computer Engineering (1991), M.S. in Computer Science (1993), and Ph.D. in Computer Science (1999), all from PUC-Rio, followed by a postdoctoral degree at ISIMA (Université Blaise Pascal, France) in 2003. Professor Colcher's research spans foundational and applied domains in network technologies, with emphasis on performance analysis of distributed systems and digital media delivery architectures. His work bridges theoretical computer science with industry applications, particularly in multimedia streaming protocols and telecommunications infrastructure design. He is renowned for translating complex networking concepts into accessible educational frameworks through his influential textbooks. He received the 2012 Personality of the Year award from Assespro-RJ, recognizing his transformative contributions to Brazil's IT sector through academic leadership and industry collaboration. As Laboratory Collaborator for BTG Pactual Telemedia and IMD Coordinator, he drives industry-academia partnerships focused on digital television standards and next-generation communication systems, mentoring future technologists while advancing Brazil's position in global networking research.
