Lecturer
Dr Matthew Burns is a Lecturer in Computing Science at Ulster University's School of Computing, Faculty of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment, based at the Belfast campus (Room BC-04-315, 2-24 York Street). His research focuses on activity recognition, computer vision, and IoT applications for smart environments and healthcare. His core research interests include: Activity recognition using thermal sensors and computer vision Smart environment development with open-source IoT components Class imbalance solutions in machine learning for video classification Emotional wellbeing monitoring through sensor data fusion Unobtrusive activity tracking for healthcare applications Recent publication trends (2019-2025) show progression from thermal sensor data fusion for activity recognition to advanced computer vision applications in healthcare and content classification. His work increasingly addresses class imbalance challenges in sensitive domains like sexually suggestive video detection while maintaining focus on real-world smart environment implementations. Dr Burns serves as Co-Investigator on two major industry-funded projects: BTIIC Phase 2 (2024-2028) and the PwC Advanced Engineering and Research Centre (2021-2026), collaborating with researchers including Di Zhou (PhD candidate) and Professors Scotney, Nugent, and McClean. His h-index of 7 reflects impactful contributions to sensor-based activity recognition. His research directly supports UN Sustainable Development Goals for health and wellbeing through technological innovation in ambient assisted living systems.
