Marvin T. NiemanView profile
Professor
Marvin T. Nieman is a Professor in the Department of Pharmacology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He also serves as Vice Provost and Dean for Graduate Studies, providing strategic leadership to enhance graduate student success in research and teaching. Additionally, he is a member of the Molecular Oncology Program at the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center, reflecting his interdisciplinary research interests. Dr. Nieman holds a PhD in Cell Biology from the University of Toledo and a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Eastern Michigan University. His research focuses on platelet signaling mechanisms, particularly the role of protease-activated receptors (PARs) in thrombosis and cancer. He explores how PARs interact with other GPCRs to mediate protease signaling, using structural biology, cell signaling analyses, and animal models. Key areas include PAR4's role in stable clot formation, PAR heterodimerization effects on thrombin signaling, and platelet interactions with immune cells like neutrophils and tumor cells. His work highlights the importance of PAR4 in antiplatelet therapy and its genetic variants influencing disease outcomes. He has been recognized for his contributions with awards such as the Sol Sherry Distinguished Lecture (2022), FAHA (2018), and AACR-AFLAC Scholar (1999). He also engages in educational leadership, having co-founded the CWRU chapter of the Society for Advancing Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS). Dr. Nieman’s advising and grants focus on graduate student mentorship and collaborative projects in hemostasis and thrombosis. His lab contributes to understanding molecular mechanisms of platelet function and their implications in diseases like cancer and cardiovascular disorders. He actively participates in professional societies including the American Heart Association and American Society for Hematology.
