Prof. Dr. Klaus Werner is a Professor and Director of the Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics at Eberhard Karls University Tübingen. His research focuses on quantitative spectral analyses of compact stellar remnants, including white dwarfs, neutron stars, and accretion disks. He utilizes ground- and space-based observatories across the electromagnetic spectrum (infrared to X-ray). His work addresses topics like radiation transport, stellar atmospheres, and the equation of state of ultra-dense matter in neutron stars. Key research areas include thermal emission from neutron stars, magnetic field effects on spectral features, and the analysis of supersoft X-ray sources. He leads a research group (Group Members include Dr. Valery Kovtyukh, Dr. Thomas Rauch, and others) and has contributed to advancements in neutron star atmospheric modeling, incorporating quantum effects and gravitational light-bending. His team’s work on the CCO 1E1207.4-5209 and X-ray bursters has provided constraints on neutron star radii and mass-radius relations. Prof. Werner has been recognized with the 2003 Teaching Award from the Tübingen Children's University and an asteroid (243096 Klauswerner) named in his honor. His academic leadership includes directing the Kepler Center for Astro and Particle Physics and maintaining active collaborations with international observatories (e.g., Hubble Space Telescope, XMM-Newton).
