Mayda M. Velasco is a Full Professor in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at Northwestern University and Director of the COFI Institute in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Her research focuses on experimental particle physics, including studies of the Higgs boson, quark decays, and CP violation. She leads the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and has pioneered projects like the NA59 experiment at CERN to develop polarized photon beams. Velasco has held leadership roles in international collaborations, including the High Energy Physics Advisory Panel (HEPAP) and the CLIC-CTF3 facility board. Education: B.S. in Physics, University of Puerto Rico (1984-1988) Ph.D. in Physics, Northwestern University (1989-1995) Her research interests span precision measurements in particle physics, accelerator technologies, and fundamental interactions. She has co-authored over 500 peer-reviewed papers and received prestigious awards like the CERN Achievement Award and Sloan Fellowship. Velasco has supervised 15 graduate students and mentored 8 postdoctoral researchers, fostering academic careers for many. Awards: Alfred P. Sloan Fellow Woodrow Wilson Fellowship CERN Achievement Award She has organized major conferences like PHOTON (2007-2015) and co-chaired SNOWMASS working groups. Velasco’s leadership extends to promoting future accelerators like TLEP and CLICHÉ, reflecting her commitment to advancing high-energy physics.
